Have you ever been supported by a Business Coach? If not then you should check around because there are some great Coaches out there and this is service used by most top business people.
If you have received the support of a Business Coach, then here are a few things to bear in mind so that you can get great value and really improve your performance. Similarly, here are a few things to also watch out for that will otherwise cause you a great deal of trouble.
These are not rules, and you will encounter exceptions, but being aware of this information is unlikely to do you any harm.
Why Get Business Coaching ?
Because you cant see yourself.
Your boss, if you have one, will constantly try to coach you in a variety of ways. If you have a great boss, then no problem. But if you don’t have the worlds best boss then watch out. Your boss will use your insecurity to manipulate you. Even though your boss might have the best motives in the world, he or she will be compelled to try and manipulate you. So if you are trying to improve your performance, the boss’s coaching may be inhibiting your leadership skills.
If you don’t have a boss, and/or you try to get coaching from your business team, watch out. You do need feedback and its great to be able to get it, but the pitfalls are many. Here is a selection:
1. You can make yourself look and feel insecure if you are not careful.
2. This insecurity can in turn cause you to “shoot the messenger”. So getting good feedback form a team member can ruin that relationship. As your leadership can be measured by the number of talented individuals you can attract, loosing the more talented ones who speak up is not ultimately going to advance you.
3. You can end up worrying more about the relationship with your team than the performance of your business.
Business Coaches can find things out for you and give you great unbiased outside views on a situation. A coach with good diplomatic and mediation skills can discover fantastic approaches and strategies that will boost your career.
Business coaches that have good experience of other fields will bring you a host of great ideas that you would not otherwise have been exposed to.
Where It Can Go Wrong
Lets start by saying if you have an experience that should be mentioned here do contact us so that we can include it.
Who is in charge?
The answer should always be you. Never get told told what to do, that is the beginning of the end, and it will be your fault if that happens. If you have got a problem you are trying to resolve, that is normal. A good Coach will often see solutions very rapidly. Why, because he or she has an unbiased attitude towards the solutions. You, on the other hand, probably already know the solution. The material fact is not that you don’t know the answer, but that you are actively ignoring it. The “secret” is knowing how to get the Coach to identify why you refuse to implement obvious good solutions. More on this later. So, if you refuse to address your resistance to implementing obvious good solutions (and there may be genuine valid reasons) the Coach will get frustrated. A frustrated Coach will instantly loose respect in you, start telling you what to do......and the end of that relationship is looming. Stay in charge.
Why is the Coach doing that job in the first place?
If the Coach is an advisor in specialist fields you are probably ok. However, one of the dark “secrets” about coaches is that many of them actually want to do your job, or at least something similar. They can often be frustrated individuals with aspirations of great success. Coaches are often “practicing” on you. A Coach with ambitions will try out solutions to real issues on you. Or rather you will be doing field experiments with the coaches ideas. Now as long as both of you know this, its fine, but when this simple “secret” gets ignored, everyone will suffer.
Getting stuck with a coach?
Great coaching can last for years. It is possible to find individuals who understand you better that you know yourself, keep in touch. Conversely, many Coaches should be labelled with an expiry date. Because Coaches inherently want to work, they will tend to hang onto clients.....you. If you loose the clear purpose as to your interaction, then it is up to you to reestablish it. Whilst you might think that this is the coaches job (which in truth it should be), if you do not check that this is kept up to date you will suffer.
The end !
This has to be seen to be believed, but it does happen. Occasionally, some Coaches are primarily motivated by controlling people. If you find one of these types “run for the hills”. At the beginning you will get great tips on how to influence people. You will dramatically improve your performance. So far so good. But something will be getting erroded......your independence. If you try to escape, then that Coach will try to engineer situations where you will feel inadequate. You have been warned. Fortunately, these sort of individuals are reasonable easy to detect. One clue is a lack of good non-professional relationships. Another, is the tendency for the Coach to try to be a parent and hence make clients feel like children awaiting approval. All Coaches (good or bad) will be using you to develop themselves. So do investigate what exactly the coach you choose if actively developing in him or herself through you. If it is the skill of top management, your probably ok. Conversely, if is a sense of inadequacy stemming from a dysfunctional child hood, the coach will make you feel inadequate, so that he or she will have a suitable subject to practice on.
Summary Of How To Maximise The Benefits Of Using A Business Coach
A little planning goes a long way. There are no rules, and inspiration to explore exciting new directions is normally best followed as “out of the box experiences” teach you the most. So always maintain a simple framework for the relationship with your Coach and remember that ultimately you are the boss. That said, getting the relationship to a state where you are both mutually cooperating equals produces great results.
A good Coach can see you and your situation. What you need to know is why you ignore what the Coach can see easily. Its the “stop getting in your own way” principle. People often incorrectly see themselves as somehow incapable and in need of training. Whereas the reality is that in most situations people are almost infinitely capable, but for some reason are choosing not to be. That is why operating any business is substantially “common sense” partnered with the skill of not getting distracted from the key issues. The more a Coach can help you see the “simple truths” that make this world function, the more easily you can lead any situation. You are in effect being helped to see yourself.
Remember that you are the decision maker. It is reasonable to follow a Coach’s advice, but only because you agree with it. For more practical information Contact Us
